On his way to the College’s Spring Meeting in Maui, President Deane attended the Northern California Fellows Dinner at the City Club of San Francisco. The dinner was well attended with around fifty-five Fellows and guests. Also present were Past Presidents Doug Young and Susan Harriman, along with Retired U.S. District Judge Fern Smith and U.S. District Judge William Alsup. Regent Bill Keane and State Chair Jeff Fisher presided. After President Deane spoke about various College initiatives, including the issuance of public statements in response to attacks on judicial independence, there was a keynote speech by Lindsay Barenz, a former “BigLaw” attorney now serving as the President of the Oakland Roots SC, a USL Championship men’s soccer club, and the Oakland Soul SC, a USL women’s soccer club. She spoke of the links between sports, social activism and community involvement.
