Immediate Past President Murphy and his wife, Pat, recently attended the Sopinka Cup Trial Competition in Ottawa, Canada. The College is a co-sponsor of the competition, established to honor the memory of the late Hon. John Sopinka, Judge of the Supreme Court of Canada and a long-time Fellow. The competition involved four separate trials over two days, with eight teams representing regional winners of preliminary rounds. Regent Bernard Amyot, along with Fellows Tracey Cohen and Daniel Song, among others, were on hand with the Committee in organizing the event. Following the first day of trials, the students, coaches, trial judges, and Sopinka Cup Committee Members were invited to the Supreme Court of Canada for a reception and tour. Justice Mary Moreau, who had just been inducted as an honorary Fellow in Maui, addressed the group, as did newly appointed Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, Gary Anadasangaree. The mock trial itself focused on a case of assault based on a dispute between two men who were enamored of the same woman; the victim was struck in the head with a barstool while walking away from a heated argument. The material offered lots for the Crown and Defence to work with. The University of Alberta triumphed in the final rounds, and the students from the winning team will be recognized at the Alberta Fellows Dinner later this month.
