President John Day and his wife Joy traveled to Seattle, Washington, to attend the Neither Sword Nor Purse symposium, held at the law school on the campus of the University of Washington. The event began with a reception at the Burke Museum, an on-campus art gallery, and President Day mingled with Chief Judge Robert Henry (Ret.) (the former Chief Judge of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals); Judge Bernice Donald (Ret.) (former Judge from the Sixth Circuit, who will be the recipient of the Samuel E. Gates Litigation Award at the Annual Meeting in New York); and Chief Justice Debra Stephens (Washington Supreme Court). The program began the next day, with speakers that included Judge J. Michael Luttig (Ret.). President Day then moderated a panel consisting of former judges and former presidents of the ABA and asked them to comment on Judge Luttig’s remarks as well as various rule-of-law related subjects. The day ended with a dinner at Ivar’s Salmon House, where former Solicitor General Seth Waxman delivered remarks. The program concluded the next day with similar presentations.
