Immediate Past President Richard Deane attended the New England Fellows Dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel in Boston. About seventy attendees—including Fellows, Judicial Fellows, and guests largely from Massachusetts and New Hampshire—came together, along Regent Ellen Cohen, State Chairs Sarah Columbia (Massachusetts) and Jennifer Parent (New Hampshire), and Past Presidents Susan Harriman and Joan Lukey.
Following dinner, clips of Immediate Past President Deane’s recent Bloomberg interview were played. Then Deane spoke, offering insight into how the Executive Committee makes decisions regarding the College issuing public statements. He noted that the College has traditionally spoken sparingly, doing so only when core principles—the Rule of Law, judicial independence, and access to justice—are at stake, and explained that recent statements reflect serious concerns about threats to those principles and are issued only with full agreement within the Executive Committee.
