President-Elect John Day attended the Downstate New York Fellows Dinner on April 10 at the National Arts Club in Manhattan. This was an eventful evening with the ACTL being thanked (by Judge Lewis Kaplan, among others) for its public statements about judicial independence. President-Elect Day spoke to the assembled group about the College’s Trial Training Boot Camps and Judicial Independence Committee, while touching on the College’s process by which decisions to issue public statement are made. State Chair Sharon McCarthy and Regent Rich Strassberg then introduced the students from St. John’s University who, just the weekend before, had won the National Trial Competition in Houston, Texas. In a happy coincidence, Fellow Mike Feldberg, a member of the Harvard Mock Trial Team which won the original competition fifty years earlier, was in attendance and met the winners and their coach.
