R. Henry (Hank) Branom Jr. served as an Assistant Federal Defender in the Great Falls Office from 2006-2021. In 2022 he was named the organizations Senior Litigator. The Senior Litigator is designated as such in recognition of his/her consistently outstanding skills as a litigator, and is responsible for assisting AFDs less knowledgeable with advocacy skills. He has practiced criminal defense for over 30 years and earned his BA (cum laude) from Drury College and his JD from Washington University in St. Louis. Hank is a devoted fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He is a member of the Montana, Missouri and Illinois Bars, admitted to the United States Supreme Court, United States District Court, District of Montana, Eastern Districts of Missouri and Washington, Southern District of Illinois, and the Eighth and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal. Prior to joining the Federal Defenders of Montana he served as a Special Assistant Attorney General in Missouri and as a City and Prosecuting Attorney in several St. Louis County municipalities and was a member of the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the Southern District of Illinois.
Hank is also a member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and is a Life Member of the Montana Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In over 120 trials Hank has received not guilty verdicts in cases running the gamut from poaching to murder. He lettered on the 1981 Missouri State Class 3A football champion Lutheran North Crusaders and is inducted in the Lutheran North Crusader Hall of Honor.
