B. Todd Jones re-joined the law firm of Robins Kaplan LLP as a partner in September 2024 after serving as Special Counsel for Conduct at the NFL for nearly 10 years. In this capacity he was responsible for overseeing the Leagues risk management and disciplinary processes across a broad spectrum of activities.
He previously served as the Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in Washington D.C. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in January 2013 to serve as the agencys permanent director while he was serving as the Acting Director, a responsibility he assumed in September 2011. Following his confirmation, Jones became the agency’s first permanent director in seven years and the first Senate confirmed director. President Obama had previously nominated Jones for the position of United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota in June 2009, and he was one of the first U.S. Attorneys confirmed by the U.S. Senate following the change in Administrations that year. Prior to becoming U.S. Attorney in 2009, Jones was a partner with a major national law firm (Robins Kaplan) in Minneapolis, where his practice focused on complex business litigation, internal investigations and criminal defense.
Jones previously held the position of United States Attorney in Minnesota during the Clinton Administration. President Clinton appointed him in 1998, and he served until January 2001. Earlier in his career he served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Minnesota.
Jones received his Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1983 and his B.A. from Macalester College in 1979. Following admission to the Minnesota bar, he went on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as an infantry officer with 1st Battalion 7th Marine, First Marine Division and, subsequently, a Judge Advocate General.
In this capacity he served as both a trial defense counsel and prosecutor in a number of court martial proceedings. In 1989, he left active duty and returned to Minnesota with his family. He was recalled to active duty in 1991, during Operation Desert Storm where he was stationed at Camp Pendleton California until the cessation of hostilities. He subsequently served as Commanding Officer of the Fourth Marine Division Military Police Company, a Twin Cities based USMC reserve unit for several years until his Honorable Discharge in 1998 as a Major.
