President-Elect John Day attended the Pennsylvania (Western) Fellows Dinner, filling in for President Deane, who was visiting some of the Canadian Provinces for Fellows’ events. Hosted by State Vice Chair Veronica Richards, the diner was held in the Realto Room, on the 9th floor of the Kimpton Hotel Monaco. After the cocktail hour and before dinner, President-Elect Day provided short remarks, discussing the Annual Meeting this fall in Washington, D.C., the Boot Camp Trial Training Programs, the work of the Judicial Independence Committee, and the need to continue identifying new candidates for fellowship. After his remarks, one attendee asked a question about official statements made by the Executive Committee on behalf of the College. Specifically, the question was whether the Executive Committee thought we could only issue a statement if no Fellow might be offended. President-Elect Day explained that while the Executive Committee was very mindful of our history and the need both to be and appear to be nonpartisan, we do not feel the need to issue statements only if no Fellow could disagree with the issuance of the statement or its wording. He also advised the efforts of our current and Past Presidents to reach out to those Fellows who voice disagreement. The entire group appreciated the reasoning and efforts by the officers to preserve collegiality.
