President Day and his wife Joy attended this year’s annual, two-and-a-half day gathering of the South Carolina Fellows at the Montage Resort in Palmetto Bluff, South Carolina. A total of thirty-four Fellows along with spouses attended the activities, including State Chair Kurt Rozelsky, Past Chair Debbie Barbier and Regent Kearns Davis. A State Committee meeting was held the following day, and later, another cocktail party and casual dinner, held at Somerset Chapel on property. The Saturday program consisted of two speakers. The first was Fellow Jay Davis, who spoke about using Microsoft CoPilot in his insurance defense practice. This includes creating timelines, suggestions on cross-examination topics and much more. He also discussed using agents to automate workflows, and the Fellows were eager to learn more about AI. The second speaker was Bakari Sellers, a local attorney and CNN commentator, who was elected into South Carolina’s Legislature at age 22 while in law school. The meeting coincided with the 57th anniversary of the Orangeburg Massacre, when South Carolina Highway Patrol officers killed three African American students (and injured twenty-eight more) on the campus of South Carolina State College. Bakari’s father was involved and was sent to prison over his alleged role in a controversy two days prior as African American students attempted to integrate the nearby All Star Bowling Lanes. After the meeting, the Fellows attended a black-tie event to conclude the weekend.
