Immediate Past President Deane traveled to Ottawa to participate in the Sopinka Cup Competition, a trial competition honoring Canadian Supreme Court Justice John Sopinka, whose remarkable career spanned professional football, music, and high-profile litigation before his appointment to the Court. The visit began with a reception at the Supreme Court of Canada, hosted by Justice Suzanne Côté, who welcomed attendees and led a tour of the courthouse. Dinner followed at the historic Rideau Club. On Saturday, Immediate Past President Deane served as a feedback provider for the final round of competition, where the students demonstrated exceptional skill in a complex criminal case. That evening’s reception and dinner included a moving tribute to Justice Sopinka, with remarks from his daughter, Justice Melanie Sopinka, and others highlighting his legacy. Immediate Past President Deane also offered remarks on behalf of the College, praising the competition and its participants. This year’s Best Overall Advocate was Zachary Currie from the University of British Columbia and the Winning Team was Yuliana Kovalenko and Jacob Manirakiza from McGill University. The quality of the advocacy during the competition was excellent, and the importance of the competition to the jurists, lawyers, coaches and students was apparent throughout.
