President Day and his wife Joy attended the Puerto Rico Fellows Dinner on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Morton’s The Steakhouse in San Juan. The evening was graciously hosted by State Chair Andres Lopez and his wife Camelia Garrido. Regent Ellen Epstein Cohen was also in attendance. Approximately twelve Fellows and spouses gathered for what proved to be a warm and collegial evening. President Day addressed the group, noting that it had been seven years since the chapter last held a College event, and expressed gratitude for the evening’s gathering. He encouraged Chair Lopez to schedule another event for the coming year. Conversation during the dinner touched on the unique structure of legal practice in Puerto Rico, where attorneys seeking to practice in all courts must pass two separate bar examinations — one for the territorial courts conducted in Spanish, and one for the federal courts conducted in English. As a result, only a small fraction of the territory’s lawyers practice in federal court. Chair Lopez noted his intention to explore the territorial court system as a source of additional Fellowship candidates. President Day spoke about the College’s developing “Building and Maintaining Your Reputation” program for young lawyers. Chair Lopez expressed enthusiasm for working with the court to host a program as part of the College’s pilot project in the coming months, with Fellows potentially serving as speakers in both federal and territorial court CLE settings.
