President Deane attended the joint meeting of Fellows from North Carolina and South Carolina at the Montage Palmetto Bluff Resort located in the Low Country of South Carolina. North Carolina State Chair James Wyatt and South Carolina State Chair Deborah Barbier coordinated their efforts on the program, speakers, and activities. It was a very successful event, with approximately 150 Fellows and guests in attendance. Regent Mark “Moose” Phillips was in attendance and joined a great panel of speakers, including several distinguished judges, U.S. Magistrate Judge and Judicial Fellow Mary Gordon Baker of South Carolina and Judicial Fellow Marvin Quattlebaum from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Also, Congressman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina provided remarks to the attendees. President Deane gave the attendees an update on the College’s strategic planning, the new website and logo, and the College’s work in continuing to address matters of current concern regarding Judicial independence and respect for the rule of law. Additional speakers focused on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on the legal profession and a report on efforts to hold international corporations accountable in circumstances of child/slave labor abuses. President Deane reports that the Fellows in both states are looking forward to a meeting next year to be hosted in North Carolina.
