On November 22, President Deane traveled to Phoenix to join the Arizona Fellows in hosting the annual Jenckes Competition. This is a mock trial closing argument competition between the University of Arizona and Arizona State Law Schools. The finals are judged by Arizona Fellows. The quality of advocacy was stellar and, remarkably, two first-year students from Arizona State – having attended less than a semester of law school – prevailed over third year students from the University of Arizona. Prior to the competition, President Deane addressed the 150 in attendance and emphasized the College’s commitment the next generation of trial lawyers and pride of sponsorship. Afterwards, Fellow Georgia Stanton hosted a reception at her firm’s rooftop lounge. The next day, the Fellows convened for a state committee meeting, highlighting their collegiality and providing President Deane an opportunity to discuss the College’s strategic planning process and revision to its mission statement.
