Hanni Fakhoury is a seasoned and accomplished litigator who represents individuals and companies in criminal prosecutions and other government investigations.
For close to two decades, Hanni has handled complex federal criminal cases in courthouses throughout California, defending a wide range of matters including tax, wire, bank and securities fraud, money laundering, export control violations, and computer crimes. His recent clients include a former California state Assemblyman charged with wire fraud and money laundering, a NASA contractor accused of violating international export control laws, and a venture capital fund founder accused of bank fraud, securities fraud and money laundering. He has handled every aspect of federal criminal litigation, from plea bargaining to pre-trial motion practice to jury trial and appeal. His attention to detail and zealous advocacy has translated into success for his clients.
Before co-founding Moeel Lah Fakhoury LLP, Hanni worked as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in Oakland, San Francisco and San Diego for close to a decade. He also previously worked at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, where he was involved in cutting-edge litigation concerning law enforcement use of technology, including acquisition of cell phone location records, the FBIs use of sophisticated computer malware as an investigative tool, and compelled decryption of electronic devices. Because of his expertise and experience, he has presented and lectured at more than 100 legal conferences, and was recruited by the Federal Judicial Center to provide training to federal judges on technology and surveillance issues in criminal cases.
Hanni is an active member of numerous legal committees. He is the Vice-Chair of the Alameda County Bar Associations Appellate Executive Committee, and a member of the National Institute of Standards and Technologys Forensic Science Standards Board Legal Task Group and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers Fourth Amendment Center Tech Advisory Board. He is particularly active serving his home district of the Northern District of California, serving on its Criminal Rules and Practice Committee, Criminal Justice Act (CJA) Administration Committee, and Standing Committee on Professional Conduct. He also serves as a mediator in civil cases for the Northern Districts ADR program.
Hanni received his undergraduate degree with honors from the University of California Berkeley, and his law degree with distinction from University of the Pacific McGeorge School of Law.
